The Atmosphere

Beers and Burgers.  Kind of sets the table (no pun intended) for the type of place you’re walking into. I walked through the door and was immediately hit with all the awesome Beer paraphernalia and merchandise on the walls.  You look around and every part  of the wall seems covered with some cool classic beer sign or something similar.  Very classic…someplace you might imagine hanging out you’re your Dad at with.  Some might say it’s a sports bar but it’s much more than that.  It’s a local place that is open every day of the year from 11am-2:30am.

There’s street parking as well as a parking lot to the side of the building.  We noticed there’s a nice patio up front which would be a great place to hang out on a warm summer night.  When you sit down and take in the fact that most of their beers are Gourmet beers and beers you can’t get anywhere else…you realize you’re in for a treat.  It’s a casual place where it seems the bartender knows “her regulars” and makes you feel comfortable as soon as you walk in.

We walked right up to the bar to EAT but there were plenty of tables open.  There were a few other people in the place but we got there right at noon. The bartender quickly approached us and let us know the food and drink specials that were going on.  Little did we know that at the time we went that we were in Happy Hour pricing and got $2.00 off our sandwiches and burgers (as well as $.50 off draft beers…but…well…you know…)

She was quick to recommend some of her favorites to us and suggested sauces to try, etc.  She also brought is water without asking and was quick to refill when we ran low.

The Menu

For a place named Buckeye Beer Engine & Burgers their menu is much MUCH more than just that.  They have a wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches as well as their burgers.  It’s the burgers that really make you want to go EAT there ( and the beers that keep you drinking).  They also sport Vegetarian dishes for those who don’t want the meat and even had a Lenten special menu going on right now as well.

The menu is a well balanced assortment that can please even the most picky of eaters.  There’s something for everyone and also plenty of interesting dishes to keep you coming back to try more.  I looked around the place and everyone had three things in common.  That was a plate full of food, a pint of beer and a smile on their faces.

The food menu was broken into two.  There was the regular menu as well as the Special menu which spoke of the Lenten specials and some of their other dishes.  In addition to these menus, you are also given a beer list that lists all the different beers you can choose from here.  Not only can you get good bottles of beer but their draft selection is excellent.  On the draft selection, you can buy a 4 oz. sampler of a beer in case you want to just try it before you buy a pint.  A great idea for those who want to explore and try new beers.

The Food

Right about the time we got through with a nice pint of beer, the food started getting to the table. For appetizers, we ordered BEER CAPS (Breaded and fried jalapeno bites served with chipotle ranch dressing) and BUCKEYE PUB CHIPS AND DIP (Their special homemade Buckeye Chips served with your choice of sauce. Ranch, wucumber or chipotle ranch).  We got ours with the Wucumber (wasabi and cucumber) and the chipotle ranch.  We went with the Wucumber at the bartender’s suggestion.  She said it’s a local favorite.  To me, it reminded me of something you’d eat with sushi.  Wasn’t the biggest fan of that dip but I could see how others would be.  I’m not a big cucumber fan.  The chipotle ranch was awesome though.  The Beer Caps were really good too and made for a nice app.

Then…the Burgers started making their way to our faces.  I got the Porky Burger (1/2 pound burger cooked to your liking topped with mustard BBQ soaked pulled pork and hot pepper jack cheese).

All the burgers come standard with pub chips but since we had that as an appetizer, we opted to get Shoestring Fries instead for $.50 more.  The Burgers are also all served with a breaded fried pickle.  The Porky was fantastic.  I don’t see how you could go wrong with Beef, topped with BBQ pork.  You do it all the time with bacon…might as well try it with BBQ pulled pork instead.  One thing about this burger was it did create a little bit of a mess.  So, watch out for that if you have a meeting to attend after lunch or something like that.  Or at the very least, carry a Tide-to go pen in your car.  The Shoestring Fries are thin cut fries dusted with rosemary and oregano blended salt.  They’re really good and I highly recommend upgrading to these from the Pub Chips.

Chris got the ’76 Burger which is stacked with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato. Chris said it’s easily one of the better bacon cheese burgers he’s ever eaten.  Judging by how fast he inhaled it…I don’t think he was lying.  Seeing that burger get consumed at such a high rate of speed…I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same man again…

Our innocent bystander got the Cyclops Burger which is topped with a sunny side up egg covering applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese.  Is that considered a breakfast burger?

The bystander said it is his “go-to” burger whenever he comes there.  The bartender knew his name so something tells me he’s there quite frequently…amongst other things.  He also recommended a few of the beers to me to try next time I come.  If I wasn’t on lunch hour…I could see myself really thoroughly enjoying their selection of beers…

All in all.  Great lunch, great service, fun place.

Departing

Will we come back?  Of course, there’s so much more of this menu I need to try.  Would I send my best friend there?  Only if he promised to let me go with him.  The bartender had no problem separating our checks, made it easy to pay and got us on our way in a reasonable amount of time.  I’m leaving extremely full but also wanting more.  Buckeye Beer Engine…you’ve found a friend in me!
