The place/atmosphere:

Have you ever eaten at a place where you don’t want to wash your hands after your meal?  I’m telling you right now I won’t wash my hands until I absolutely HAVE to after eating here at The Town Fryer.  I want to smell the yummy goodness that I just ate for as long as I can.  The Town Fryer is a Rock-N-Roll style Southern fare diner located in The Agora Ballroom.  Let me just tell you right now, this place is amazing.  From the old school rock poster tabletops  to the deer heads on the walls  , everything about this place is unique, fun and different.  One thing I noticed immediately upon walking in was how amazing it smelled.  It smelled like Grandma’s house when she was cooking dinner.  Is there anything better than that? The booths are all comfortable and face towards the stage where they regularly have performing acts come in and play.

The jukebox in the corner of the diner is free to play.  While we were there, Motown favorites took you back in time to another place.  Everything’s casual and laid back at The Town Fryer.

All in all, The Town Fryer is such a unique, fun and cool place to eat lunch at.  It’s a place you feel comfortable at.  A place you want to take your friends to.  And, in my humble opinion…a place that Guy Fieri totally missed out on when he came through Cleveland for Diners, Drive-Thru’s and Dives.  Everything about this place SCREAMS that show.  It’s a one of a kind place…and I have even started on the food yet.

What was ordered:

Joel:  As a side note, you can eat salads and burritos here if you didn’t want fried food. I thought I’d throw that in there for anyone who is thinking of healthy alternatives.

We started out our dive into Southern fried goodness with Fried Pickles. Now, I’ve had a lot of fried pickles in my day but these were by far the best I’ve ever had.  This was the best appetizer we’ve had so far while doing Eating Around Town.  I’m not sure exactly how she does to her pickles what exactly she does…but it’s incredible.  First, they’re thinly sliced and deep friend. That’s good enough if you ask me…but then she serves them with a remoulade sauce for dipping that seriously is OUT OF THIS WORLD good.  At $5, you honestly can’t go here without tasting some of these.

I also tried a Tex-Mex eggroll.  This was an eggroll with dirty rice, spicy chicken and beans wrapped up in an eggroll wrapper and served with her homemade salsa.  Wow, so tasty and at a $1.50, it’s well worth trying.

For my main dish, I tried her signature Red Beans and Rice.  Unfreakingbelieveable.  That’s the best way of describing this.  I haven’t had this good of Red Beans and Rice since I was down in New Orleans a few years ago…and these even beat the stuffing out of that serving.  Spiced up with Cayenne Pepper and Andouille sausage, it’s an extremely filling lunch portion for $5.95.  She seasons everything perfectly.  I liked the addition of celery and onions to the mix as it helped balance the spiciness of everything else.  Great dish!

Chris:  He went old school southern and got the Catfish Platter.  This is $9.95 and served with french fries and coleslaw.  What makes the phenomenal is that the catfish is still perfectly flaky and fried to perfection.  It doesn’t shred when you cut into it like a lot of fried fish does.  Chris is a big Irish Cuisine eater and Fish N Chips is one of his absolute favorite meals.  He said he would take this Catfish and Fries over any Fish N Chips he’s ever had.  it was so good that he actually shared with me some of the fries and fish.  I got to tell you, he wasn’t lying.  The fish was still juicy and flaky and the batter she fries it in is perfectly spiced.  This is served with a tartar sauce for dipping and ketchup for the fries.  Neither one of them even need the dipping sauces.  That’s hard for me to say.  I love ketchup.  I put ketchup ON my ketchup.  But not on these fries.  No sir. Not needed.

We liked our lunches so much we even did dessert.  For us to do dessert says A LOT about how bad we didn’t want to leave here.  For dessert, I did the Fried Twinkie ($3)covered in Powdered Sugar and Chocolate Syrup.  This is so good, you’ll slap your mama.  Seriously.  Wow.  What else can I say about it?

Chris got the Deep Fried Oreos ($3 for 4).  I swear, these things could bring World peace to us single-handedly. The first bite into one of these is like biting into a chocolate cake.  Perfectly fried and warm…let’s just call it an Oreo-gasm and get it over with. Seriously.

Innocent bystander:

Well, nobody else was in here to eat when we got there around 12:20.  So, we’re going to take the words of Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Scorchers whose signed Concert poster above our table read “May your catfish always make the song sound better”.  We’re taking that as a rave review as well on their catfish.  Chris nods his head in agreement.

Hour Later Review:

Well, it’s a lot of fried food so I had to wake myself up at my cubicle to write this review.  Serious nap time is needed.

Would we go back:

Well, here’s the sad part.  I would go back to this place at least once a month if I could.  Maybe even more just to take other people there.  As we were wrapping up our meal, we got to talking to the owner.  She informed us that The Town Fryer is closing February 14th as she is going to Law School.  I have to tell you, this is the type of place Eating Around Town was looking for when we started writing about Cleveland food.  It’s a hole in the wall that serves up great food at affordable prices.  It’s unique, fun and you leave so satisfied. While Chris and I were sitting there eating, we were talking about the “next time” we come here we’re getting this or that, this or that.  We wanted to order Deep Fried Macaroni but an office building next door had swooped in before us and ordered all of her lunch portions before we had the chance.  Now, knowing what we know about their closing of the doors on February 14th, we’ll have to go there again before then.  I STRONGLY urge you to do the same.  This is the type of place you do not want to miss if you’re in Cleveland.  Everything about this place is fantastic.  As an aside, I strongly urge you to try all the places we write about if you can.  Supporting local food joints is what this site is all about.  Do you part and go EAT somewhere soon.  You don’t want to miss out on The Town Fryer so get out there ASAP and let her know we sent you.
