Presto Sandwiches

Review by Joel Kirk

401 Euclid Ave., in the Old Arcade
Cleveland, OH

Presto Sandwiches is a new sub shop in downtown Cleveland. They have another location out in Fairview Park. They should have stayed there. When you think of the word “Presto”…what comes to mind? For me, words like “Quick” or “Magic”…things like that. This place is neither.  We were the only ones who walked into the place when we got there and it took 8-10 minutes for us to get our lunch.  Not what you’d expect from a walk up Sub place. The only thing “Presto” about it is the stomachache we all got after eating there.  Presto…more like PrestNO.

The place/atmosphere:

The best thing about Presto is the location.  Situated on Euclid Avenue across from The Corner Alley and at the end of the Arcade, at least you get a nice view from their floor to ceiling windows as you sit and eat.  The menu is fun, with sandwiches named “Yo! Adrian” and “Manly Man”; however, they should spend more time with the quality of their product than how “funny” the names of their sandwiches are.  I understand the “Sub sandwich at lunch” market is a tough market to be in with the well known franchised locations all around downtown…but if you can make a good quality sub then people will tear down your walls to eat it.

What was ordered:

Joel:  The Warrior.  This sub had Turkey, Roast Beef, Ham, lettuce tomato, pepperjack cheese (at the cashiers suggestion) and pepper mayo stuffed in 8 inches of bread and then grilled.  Where I think this sandwich goes wrong is in the Pepper Mayo.  This had to be what is making my stomach do more flip flopping than presidential candidates.  As a side, I had “Pasta Potpourri”.  This was a pasta salad with olives, carrots, etc.  It was easily the best part of the meal.  The olives were great (green stuffed with feta and black) and the pastas were a Tortellini and a Ravioli.  It was topped with a vinaigrette style dressing and served cold.  The sub is served with a pickle but it’s not anything too special either. My bill came to just under $10 with a drink.

Chris: The “Manly Man” sandwich.  This was a Roast Beef and Bacon, Provolone, peppers, onions, mustard and Mayo.  Basically a Philly Cheese steak.  Minus the Philly.  And the taste.  Chris went the safe route and got the chips as a side.  This also came with a pickle.  All told, only $8.50…but it makes you ask if it’s really worth it once the rumbling starts.  Chris said the best part of his meal were the chips.  problem is, they are chips you can buy at the store.

Innocent bystander:

Turkey and Avocado sandwich.  “Not too much you can do to screw this up, right?”

Hour Later Review:

Bad news.  That’s all I have to say about that.

Would we go back:

Most likely not.  There’s nothing that makes it stand apart from other subs you can get your hands on downtown.  The sandwiches were “sub”standard, the service slow and the price a bit high, considering all the competition.  I guess if I wanted a good pasta salad, I might walk over for that…but let’s be honest here…I won’t.
