Skyline Chili

So, Skyline might not be a COMPLETE dive like the places we like to go in…but any place that has some locations that sell Immodium AD at their cash register is the type of place the guys at Eating Around Town have to go to.  It screams “Eat me…regret me later!”  That’s just the type of lunch we like! If you’re new to a Skyline Chili, just go with the classic 3-way and a Coney dog.  I strayed from the usuals and went EXTREME…but what else would you expect from me?  Go big or go home brother!

The place/atmosphere:

Ridge Park Square is an all right place, not too far from downtown.  Took us about 15 minutes to get down there and 15 minutes to get back.  You walk into the restaurant and it takes you back to 3rd grade, standing in line at the cafeteria.  You grab a tray and half-expect an old lady with a hairnet to slop some slop down on top of it.  instead, you get an old white guy who slops some “chili” on top of your spaghetti.  How awesome is that…seriously?  I had Skyline a LONG time ago and went in with a little bit of prejudice.  My 1st experience wasn’t the greatest. After going this time, however; things might have shifted back into their favor.  One things for certain…other things shifted on the way home from eating this as well.

What was ordered:

Joel: Ok, when we started this website…I promised you i would always go STRONG.  Go with the “signature” dish or the most “EXTREME” thing they offered.  Well, today I went with a Chili 5-way and 2 coneys with what they call their EXTREME cheese.  It’s a habanero pepper blended cheese…that adds a LOT more “kick to the tastebuds” as the general manager explained to me. Fine, I’m up to the challenge.  Bring it Skyline!  A 5-way is Chili with red beans, diced onions and cheese on Spaghetti.  The Coney’s had cheese, mustard chili and onions.  It really was pretty amazing.  The one thing I once didn’t like too much about Skyline in the past was that is was a little too sweet for my liking.  After getting the EXTREME cheese and adding some hot sauce…I got it to be a lot more hot…and it’s won me over.

Also, while there…I did what is called the Skyline Hot Sauce Challenge.  This is where you take their oyster crackers and the ones that have little cracks in them, you fill the oyster cracker with their Hot Sauce.  Then you down them like you’re taking shots.  Click on the watch?v link right below to see the video:

Chris:  Chris went the 3-way (chili, cheese, spaghetti) and 2 Coney’s.  He preferred to stick to the classic menu.  He decided to go with their classics to rate.  All in all, he was very happy with the trip down to Brooklyn.  Said it was well worth the drive from downtown to go down there.  He recommends “Priming the Pump” before going to lunch at Skyline…you go ahead and decide on what he means by that.  All I know is that he gave me a 5 minute warning before we left for lunch and he wasn’t in his cube.

Innocent bystander:

When looking around the cafeteria for an innocent bystander, I noticed something.  It was a real “brodeo”.  All males in this place…except for one little old lady sitting by herself by the door (like she was ready to flee!).While she wouldn’t let me take a picture of her food…I asked her what she was eating.  It was her 1st time in!  She just ordered what the guy in front of her ordered (4-way chili) because she had heard “good things about this place”.  It’s people like this that make America what it is.  I applaud you little old lady by the window!

Hour Later Review:

Chris is fine (priming the pump??) but within 10 minutes of getting back to the office, I needed another break.  Might have been the hot sauce challenge…

Would we go back:

Absolutely.  It’s a bit of a drive from downtown…but on a nice Fall day when there’s good weather and a friend who’s been annoyingly craving it (ahem)…then I’d for sure recommend it.  Just make them drive.  That’s what I did…
